Ruffle Bowls
Before this semester I had never touched clay. I thought ceramics was going to be hard and I wouldn’t like getting messy, but I really enjoyed it. I created multiple bowls this semester and could definitely see the growth with my work along the way. I would come into the art room often outside of my class time, and one day I was playing around with some clay and made an interesting design. The bowl that I had made had this ruffle design on the lip of the bowl and I decided to make more bowls similar to the first one I made. After throwing each bowl, I would then finish by making the ruffle design using my fingers. I would hold the outside of the bowl with two fingers and then drag the inside of the bowl up with my finger to make the ruffle design. Once each bowl was bisque fired, I then painted the inside of them each a different color while the outside remained white. The colors I used reminded me of my childhood and if I had to describe my childhood with one word it would be colorful. My family and I would travel a lot when I was little. We would go to Disney World, St. Thomas, Marco Island, Barcelona, etc. Each place I have gone to had a different color scheme to it. The color of my bowls are bright and colorful and it reminds me of all the places I traveled as a little kid. This is what you see displayed today. I had never found art to be enjoyable, but ceramics gave me a whole new perspective on art and I hope to take IB art by my junior year.
